Bruno and the Wobbly Bike

A short picture story about practising and not giving up, for ages 4 to 7. Read it together, listen to it or print it.

Ages 4 to 7 · 3-minute read

Bruno the bear got a shiny blue bike for his birthday. He sat on it, pushed the pedals, and... wobble, wobble, bump!

He fell onto the grass.

"I'll never learn," said Bruno, rubbing his knee. Kiko sat down next to him.

"Remember when you couldn't swim? You practised every day." Bruno thought about it. "So maybe I can't ride a bike... yet."

So Bruno tried again. And again. Each day he went a little further: five pushes, then ten, then all the way to the big tree.

He still fell sometimes, but every time he got back on.

One sunny morning, Bruno rode all the way around the park without stopping. Everyone cheered.

"Practice is like magic," said Bruno, "slow magic, but it works."

What Bruno learned

Nobody is good at something the first time. Every try teaches your body and your brain a little more. When it is hard, add the word "yet": I can't do it yet.

Talk about it

  1. What happened the first time Bruno got on his bike?
  2. What little word did Bruno add when he said "I can't"?
  3. What would you like to practise until you can do it?

Try it this week

Practise one thing for five minutes every day, and colour a star.
