Kiko and the Tall Slide

A short picture story about trying hard things, for ages 4 to 7. Read it together, listen to it or print it.

Ages 4 to 7 · 3-minute read

At the park there was a new slide, the tallest one Kiko had ever seen. Bruno the bear climbed up and whooshed down. "Come on, Kiko!"

But Kiko's tummy felt wobbly. "It's too high," he said.

Grandma Owl sat down next to him. "Do you know what being brave means?" she asked.

"Not being scared?" said Kiko. "No," said Grandma. "Being brave is when you feel scared, and you try anyway. One small step at a time."

Kiko held the rail and climbed one step. Then another. Halfway up he stopped and took a big breath.

"Just one more," he said to himself. And then another. And then he was at the top!

Wheee! Kiko zoomed down the slide and landed on the soft grass. He was laughing.

"Again!" he shouted. The slide had not changed one bit. But Kiko had.

What Kiko learned

Being brave doesn't mean you are not scared. It means you try anyway, one small step at a time. Hard things get smaller once you have done them.

Talk about it

  1. Why didn't Kiko want to go on the slide at first?
  2. What did Grandma Owl say being brave means?
  3. What is something you were scared of, and then tried?

Try it this week

Try one new or hard thing each day. Colour a star for every brave try.
